Story of the Arctic
Story of the Arctic
Author/Designer: Dylan Russell
The Story of the Arctic is a Twine game in which you navigate the life of an arctic predator and explore the challenges faced by animals as they conquer the arctic terrain. Its central themes are how humans impact Arctic nature and the effects of climate change on the Arctic terrain. The game is designed from a young animal's perspective, putting the viewers in a disadvantaged and oblivious state, similar to how animals will face in their true lives.
The Story of the Arctic shows the confusion of animals as they face the effects of human interference in the arctic climate. The game depicts the chemicals coming from the oil refinery, the heat created from the generators, the loss of game from human interference, and other problems which create confusion and chaos in the animal's life. This article by the WWF arctic programme describes possible ways that polar bears are being threatened in their ecosystem; another article by WWF arctic programme describes how climate change and human interference threaten their population. My hope is that the game reveals some of the environmental effects that humans have in the Arctic region. Hopefully, players leave the game motivated to make a positive impact on our planet's future wildlife preservation.
